Salary Increases - Advanced Degrees

Policy Number: C.E.S.P. 1-38
Date Revised: 1-11-2007
Supersedes: 10-10-2003

Summary: Establishes policy and procedure regarding salary increases for non-classified employees receiving advanced degrees in appropriate subject matter disciplines.

An employee in an academic faculty position who completes a doctoral degree may receive a salary increase in an amount necessary to make the salary commensurate with that paid to others with similar titles, education and experience.

A non-classified employee who completes a master's degree and meets the appropriate criteria below may receive a salary increase in an amount up to the difference between minimum salaries for the bachelor's and master's levels.  The increase will be equal to the amount necessary to maintain internal compensation equity.

Criteria

County Agents hired with a Bachelor's degree must have a minimum 2.70 GPA and their letter of offer must include the recommendation that the Master's degree should be obtained within five years. Upon completion of the advanced degree within the stated timeframe, an increase in salary will be granted.

Program Associates, preferably hired with a Master's degree, may be hired with a Bachelor's degree, a minimum GPA of 2.70, and a minimum of five years of Extension-related work experience. If hired with a Bachelor's degree, the letter of offer must state that the Master's degree should be obtained within five years. Upon completion of the advanced degree within the stated timeframe, an increase in salary may be granted depending on the agreed upon terms as stated in the offer letter.

Program Technicians are hired with a Bachelor's degree and no GPA requirement. Since an advanced degree is not a requirement of this position, no salary adjustment will be made if an advanced degree is conferred.

Support Specialists (employees with Project/Program line item titles) will only be granted a salary increase for obtaining an advanced degree if the position was posted with the advanced degree preferred and if the letter of offer stipulates the timeframe within which the advanced degree must be completed.

Official Transcript

It is the responsibility of the employee to submit an official transcript from the degree-granting institution certifying that the degree has been conferred. Upon receipt of transcript, the supervisor will submit the transcript with the Request for Personnel Action ( E.H.I.R.E. -100) form for higher authority approval and addition to the employee’s personnel file.

Salary increases for advanced degrees will be effective on the first day of the month that the paperwork is received by the Payroll department.
