Section Leader

Nature and Purpose
The Section Leader is a faculty member of the Cooperative Extension Service, University
of Arkansas, and may hold a concurrent appointment with the U.S. Department of
Agriculture.
The Section Leader provides administrative and program leadership for a subject-matter
section within the agriculture and natural resources program area.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
• The Section Leader is also assigned program responsibilities of an Extension specialist.

•
Develops and maintains a knowledge of the Extension program planning process and gives
leadership to specialists in carrying out program planning.
•
Conducts continuous evaluation of the support given to the overall Extension program by
the assigned section.
•
Budgets and controls allocation of travel funds apportioned to the section.
• Recruits, selects, and recommends for employment personnel for faculty and staff positions within the section.
•
Conducts an annual performance evaluation of directly supervised faculty and staff.
•
Confers with Research and Extension Center directors and/or department heads on
evaluations of joint appointees.
•
Recommends personnel actions relating to faculty and support staff
within the section.
•
Approves requests for leave, travel authorization requests, and other administrative
items as appropriate.
•
Responsible for timely preparation and submission of required reports.
• Responsible for compliance with civil rights regulations in
programs and employment. • Develops and maintains, as necessary,
employment records and disciplinary documentation for civil rights verification.
•
Performs other duties as assigned.
Relationships
•
Works under direct supervision of the Associate Director - Agriculture and Natural
Resources.
•
Cooperates with other administrative and program personnel as appropriate.
•
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with superiors, associates,
subordinates, and clientele as appropriate.
•
Maintains effective working relationships with appropriate department heads and Research
and Extension Center directors.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
•
Doctorate preferred, master's degree may be accepted, in the appropriate subject matter or
closely related
field. Knowledge, Skills, and
Abilities
•
Knowledge of the history, philosophy, objectives, and methods of Cooperative Extension
work.
•
Knowledge of organizational structure, budgeting procedures, personnel management, and
administrative policies.
•
Knowledge of and ability to apply principles of management.
•
Ability to speak and write clearly and communicate ideas effectively.
•
Physical and mental ability to perform duties and responsibilities related
to the job effectively, including long and irregular hours of work and frequent travel.
