County Extension Agent - Agriculture

Nature and Purpose
The County Extension Agent - Agriculture is a faculty member of the
Cooperative Extension Service, University of Arkansas, and may hold a
concurrent appointment with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The County Extension Agent - Agriculture assists in the planning,
implementation, and evaluation of one or more major phases of the county
Extension program in agriculture or related fields. Usually, at least 25
percent of the agent's time is devoted to the 4-H youth development
program area.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Program Planning
• Develops and maintains an adequate knowledge of the social, economic,
political, and cultural characteristics of the county; maintains effective
liaison with local leaders.
• Helps analyze situational information with other county faculty
members and identifies educational needs of clientele that can be met
through Extension program activities.
• Assists as required with County Extension Council or its
subcommittees.
• Gives leadership or assists in preparing the plan of work relating
to area assigned.
• Works with other faculty members on long- and short-range program
planning in program area assigned.
Program Implementation
• Conducts the educational programs in area of assigned responsibility.
• Provides educational information to leaders in organized groups
that facilitate and assist in carrying out the county Extension
program.
• Organizes programs around needs of clientele for learning and
leadership development.
• Recruits and trains leaders; provides counsel and assistance to
leaders in organizing, conducting, and evaluating meetings and
programs.
• Utilizes Extension specialists and other resource personnel for
subject matter, teaching methods, and other materials.
• Uses appropriate educational methods in disseminating information
relating to the work.
• Performs other organizational duties and tasks assigned.
• Provides logistical support for youth and adult events and
activities, as necessary.
Program Evaluation
• Evaluates program efforts based on stated objectives. Recommends
improvements as needed.
• Utilizes County Extension Council and others to evaluate
program process and results.
Civil Rights/Equal Opportunity
• Plans and conducts programs in compliance with applicable civil rights
regulations.
Other
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Relationships
• Responsible to the county Extension agent - staff chair.
• Receives from the district director/associate district director
guidance and counsel in program planning, execution, evaluation, and
professional development.
• Receives technical subject matter assistance from state and
area specialists.
• Provides leadership to lay persons involved in the county
Extension program.
• Cooperates with other members of the county Extension faculty
in Extension program areas of mutual interest.
• Supports county faculty's efforts in maintaining favorable
working relationships with agencies, organizations, and groups.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
• Bachelor's degree in agriculture, natural resources or related field of study
required; master's degree preferred. Candidates for new hire with bachelor's
degree only must have a minimum G P A of: (a) 2.7 on all course work prior to
the bachelor's degree, OR (b) 3.2 on the last 60 hours attempted, OR (c) 3.0 on
12 hours of graduate study.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge in agricultural subject matter areas assigned.
• Knowledge of the organization, operation, philosophy, and
objectives of the Cooperative Extension Service.
• Knowledge of the social, economic, and cultural factors
affecting the Extension program.
• Knowledge of and ability to apply the principles and
techniques of Extension teaching.
• Ability to speak and write clearly and communicate ideas
effectively.
• Physical and mental ability to effectively perform duties and
responsibilities related to the job, including long and irregular
hours of work and frequent travel. (Many positions require ability
to move about in plowed or flooded crop fields and/or to work in
livestock facilities under conditions of extreme heat or cold.)
