Assistant Director - Family and Consumer Sciences

Nature and Purpose
The Assistant Director – Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) is a
faculty member of the Cooperative Extension Service, Division of
Agriculture, University of Arkansas and serves as a member of the Executive Team of the
Associate Vice President for Agriculture – Extension.
This position reports to the Associate Director – Programs.
The Assistant Director – Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) is
responsible for leadership for the development of Extension programs in
the area of family and consumer sciences.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
• Provides leadership in planning, implementing, and evaluating
programs in the assigned area.
• Coordinates development of plans of work and reports.
• Coordinates dissemination of research information.
• Counsels with district directors in analyzing problem
situations and program needs.
• Supervises faculty and certain support staff assigned to
the program area.
• Serves as liaison with officials of state and federal
agencies and other segments of the University of Arkansas System as
appropriate.
• Responsible for compliance with applicable civil rights
regulations in area of assignment.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Relationships
•
Reports to the Associate Director – Programs.
•
Services as a member of the Executive Team of the Associate Vice
President for Agriculture – Extension.
•
Works closely with associate directors, unit heads, district
directors team, and other assistant directors in the administration of
Extension programs.
•
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with
federal, state, and university officials, farm organizations, commodity
groups, other organizations, and the general public.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
• Doctorate required. Training and experience in a discipline related to
one of the family and consumer sciences or other related field required.
• Five years of professional Extension experience preferred.
• Experience in planning and implementing educational programs required.
• Administrative experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
•
Knowledge of the history, philosophy, objectives, and methods of
Cooperative Extension work.
• Knowledge of the social, economic, political, and cultural
factors affecting Extension work.
• Ability to develop and manage innovative programs in Extension
or related activities.
• Ability to develop rapport with the general public, commodity
organizations, and other groups concerned with the program areas served.
• Ability to speak and write clearly, and to convey ideas
effectively to faculty, staff, and the general public.
• Physical and mental ability to effectively perform duties and
responsibilities related to the job, including long and irregular hours of
work and frequent travel.
