Printer I (Grade 13)

Nature and Purpose

The Printer I is a staff member of the Cooperative Extension Service, University of Arkansas.

The Printer I operates offset press, printing various types of material for distribution, and properly maintains printing equipment and supply inventory.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepares materials for printing; performs lay-out and paste-up work; utilizes vertical camera; and shoots and develops negatives, halftones, line, and photomechanical transfers (P M T), screens, reductions, and enlargements.

• Prepares negatives for metal plates.

• Prepares metal plates for presses by burning, developing, gumming, and punching.

• Operates offset press to print leaflets, letterheads, programs, forms, and various other materials.

• Controls operation of the presses while printing to ensure quality and proper number of copies.

• Operates electrostatic plate maker and camera for assuring proper lens exposure, timing, and length of materials.

• Performs bindery duties: collates, wraps, counts, folds, pads, trims, punches, and prepares materials for shipping.

• Operates 36-inch digital paper cutter.

• Operates forklift and pallet jack, unloading and loading supplies.

• Answers telephone, takes and delivers messages, and provides requested information or refers callers.

• Inventories supplies and informs supervisor of items needed.  

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Relationships

• Works under the supervision of the Print Shop Manager.  

• Maintains and establishes effective working relationships with supervisors and associates.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• High school graduate (equivalency certificate accepted).  

• One year of advanced structured training in printing techniques and practices; plus two years of experience in the printing trade.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of basic principles of printing.

• Knowledge of operation and care of printing equipment.

• Knowledge of printing supplies and materials.

• Ability to operate offset press, collator, folder, paper cutter, and related equipment.

• Ability to follow detailed instructions.

• Ability to learn assigned tasks within a reasonable time and to adhere to prescribed procedures and routines.

• Ability to stand for long periods of time.  

• Ability to do occasional heavy lifting.
