Print Shop Manager
(Grade 20)

Nature and Purpose

The Print Shop Manager is a staff member of the Cooperative Extension Service, University of Arkansas.

The Print Shop Manager supervises and coordinates operation of the print shop and  performs related administrative tasks.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Supervises personnel assigned to the printing  department.

• Supervises setup, procedure, and process of making negatives and plates.

• Programs computerized printing equipment.

• Observes operation of presses, collating, and binding machines.

• Determines most economical method of producing printed materials.

• Analyzes print shop operations and makes recommendations for improving operational efficiency.

• Reviews finished printing products by proofreading, conference, or observation.

• Operates printing equipment and assists with support functions when required.

• Assigns printing jobs to meet deadlines.

• Monitors job performance of print shop staff, counsels as needed, and prepares timely performance evaluations.

• Determines if printing equipment needs repair or service; performs minor repairs.

• Maintains adequate inventory of supplies through the Banner Stores Inventory system; reorders when necessary.

• Actively markets print shop services to external State agencies.

• Provides requested information to callers.

• Screens and interviews applicants for printing department positions.

• Trains new staff members as needed.

• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of equipment available and assists with purchasing.

• Obtains price quotes for materials.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Relationships

• Works under direct supervision of the Associate Director for Finance and Administration.  

• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with superiors and associates.

• Favorably represents Extension in contacts with clientele and the general public.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• High school graduate (equivalency certificate accepted.)

• Two years of advanced structured training in printing techniques and practices. 

• Five years of experience in various phases of printing trade, including supervisory experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of the principles, procedures, and techniques of printing.

• Knowledge of the operation and care of printing equipment.

• Knowledge of the printing supply materials.

• Ability to calculate job costs.

• Ability to plan, organize, and supervise work.

• Ability to learn the Banner Stores Inventory system and keep print shop inventory up to date.

• Ability to operate forklift, pallet jack, and various kinds of printing equipment.

• Ability to perform occasional heavy lifting.

• Ability to communicate effectively with employees, external State agencies, and other print shop clientele.

• Ability to work with equipment and supply vendors.

• Ability to perform personnel management tasks.
