Plant Maintenance Supervisor
(Grade 18)

Nature and Purpose

The Plant Maintenance Supervisor is a staff member of the Cooperative Extension Service, University of Arkansas.

The Plant Maintenance Supervisor position involves supervising all grounds personnel, proper lawn care, and maintaining inventory of lawn supplies, spare parts for motor pool vehicles, and lawn equipment.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Coordinates and assigns work and priorities for lawn care personnel.

• Monitors job performance of  plant maintenance personnel and counsels as needed.

• Operates lawn equipment and tractor on a daily basis.

• Supervises the acquisition, distribution, storage, and maintenance of supplies.

• Receives incoming shipments of supplies and equipment and prepares documentation of damaged or incorrect shipments.

• Operates pick-up truck with trailer and other assigned equipment.

• Delivers vehicles and equipment to the shop for repairs.

• Trains grounds personnel on policies and procedures; maintains ongoing training program.

• Performs maintenance on sprinkler system.

• Instructs and trains new personnel on the proper care and use of all assigned equipment.  

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Relationships

• Works under the supervision of the Director of Physical Plant.  

• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with superiors, associates, and clientele.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• High school graduate (equivalency certificate acceptable).

• Three (3) years of experience in lawn care, including supervisory responsibility.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of state and federal procedures and standards on the use of chemicals.

• Certification by the Plant Board on the use of all chemicals used in lawn care.

• Knowledge of purchasing policies and procedures for lawn care equipment and supplies.

• Ability to make estimates on lawn needs.

• Ability to maintain complete records of inventory status.

• Ability to inspect and determine the need for equipment repairs.

• Ability to perform frequent heavy lifting and climbing.

• Ability to supervise and manage activities.  

• Ability to operate pick-up truck with trailer and various lawn equipment (must have valid driver's license).
