Maintenance Technician

Nature and Purpose

The Maintenance Technician is a staff member of the Cooperative Extension Service, University of Arkansas.

The Maintenance Technician provides general maintenance services for the buildings, grounds, and equipment at the C. A. Vines Arkansas 4-H Center.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

A. Daily Tasks

Water treatment plant

• Performs visual inspection

• Back flushes green sand filter when needed

• Adds caustic soda and potassium permanganate to chemical feeders as needed

Waste water treatment plant (sewer system)

• Performs visual inspection of plant as outlined in Maintenance Manual

• Checks:

a. Rate of flow through system
b. Color of liquid in aeration tank
c. Level of waste water in surge tank

B. Routine and Intermittent Tasks

Repair and maintenance - buildings

• Replaces light bulbs in all buildings as needed

Checks with housekeeper for needed repairs in lodging rooms, such as:

a. Commodes
b. Leaky faucets
c. Light chains
d. Locks, etc.

• Cuts firewood for pavilion, shop, and fire ring Paints Replaces ceiling tiles

• Patches sheetrock

• Checks leaks in bathrooms

• Air conditioning repairs and maintenance (minor)  

a. replaces filters 

b. Troubleshoots in lodging rooms

c. Replaces hot water heater elements

• Monitors and repairs pumps at sewer plant

• Repairs furniture

Maintenance - outside

• Carries out construction projects (e.g., rose garden, amphitheater, waste water plant)

• Maintains flower beds

• Performs yard sodding, grass bed preparation

• Repairs mechanical systems (e.g., water treatment plant)

Relationships

• Works under the supervision of 4-H Center Director.

• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with superiors and associates.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• High school graduate (equivalency certificate accepted).

• Two years of related work experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Basic knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical repair, and painting.

• Ability to work independently.

• Ability to handle numerous assignments concurrently.

• Ability to obtain state certification as waste water treatment plant operator.

• Physical ability to perform manual labor tasks including climbing, stooping, bending, and heavy lifting.

• Physical ability to perform functions in an outdoor setting in all weather conditions.
