Livestock News Reporter

Nature and Purpose
The Livestock News Reporter is a staff member of the Cooperative Extension Service,
University of Arkansas.
The Livestock News Reporter collects and analyzes livestock market information for
reporting to producers, buyers, and consumers; assists with training youth livestock
judging teams; and assists with live cattle demonstrations.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Duties may include:
• Attends major livestock sales.
•
Observes and evaluates all classes of livestock, e.g., physical conditions, weight
range, reruns or traders; grades by USDA system, e.g., Prime, Choice, Good, Standard, or
Utility.
•
Secures number of livestock sold and prices paid.
•
Notes trade activity and determines cause for market trend.
•
Writes report of sale noting price trend, number sold, grades, and weight range for the
news media.
•
Compiles weekly livestock summaries.
•
Prepares and produces daily and weekly livestock market report for radio news broadcast.
•
Prepares and provides livestock market reports for newspapers, television, computer
Internet, bulletin board, and satellite news service.
•
Assists with training youth livestock judging teams.
•
Performs data entry and analysis of production and financial information for Arkansas
Steer Feedout Project.
•
Performs other duties as assigned.
Relationships
•
Works under general supervision of the Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist.
•
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with supervisors,
organizations, and the general public.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
•
High school diploma (or G E D) required.
•
Formal education equivalent of Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science, Agriculture, or
related field preferred. (Appropriate experience may be substituted for education.)
Knowledge, Skills, and
Abilities
•
Knowledge of the U S D A livestock grading system.
•
Knowledge of livestock, breeds, and physical condition.
•
Knowledge of terminology used in livestock market reporting.
•
Ability to evaluate livestock and analyze market trend.
•
Ability to write and present a livestock market report.
•
Ability to travel regularly in assigned area.
•
Ability to speak clearly and distinctly for radio broadcasts.
•
Ability to work regularly while subjected to noise, dust, and animal odors.
•
Ability to safely move about as needed in livestock facilities.
•
Some positions may require proficiency in data entry, typing, and language skills.
