Instructional Design Specialist

Nature and Purpose
The Instructional Design Specialist is a faculty member of
the Cooperative Extension Service, University of Arkansas. The position is
responsible to the Associate Vice President for Agriculture - Extension for administrative
purposes. This position will involve applying all aspects of the instructional
design process to course development for electronic delivery.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
• Develop and maintain a long range plan for distance learning of non-credit course for
Extension programming.
•
Develop and draft proposed policies, procedures and standards related to distance
learning.
•
Provide training in instructional design for electronic course delivery for all
Extension faculty and staff.
•
Assist faculty in planning and adapting on-going Extension courses and programs to
electronic delivery.
•
Coordinate and advise web site teams and web advisory committee in electronic course
delivery.
•
Assist in the management of software resources supporting web-based and compressed
interactive video distance learning.
•
Coordinate with other universities and states in delivery of joint distance learning
ventures.
•
Maintain knowledge of development in the field of electronic course delivery for
possible application in Extension programming.
•
Research and recommend purchase of software to enhance program delivery, then provide
faculty and staff training in use of such software.
Relationships
•
Works directly with the Associate Director - Agriculture and Natural
Resources and Associate Director - Family, Youth and 4-H Education to identify possible
programs for delivery through distance learning.
•
Maintains working relationships with all Extension faculty in the
development of programs for distance learning
•
Maintains working relationships with the Computer and Communications
departments to obtain program support for distance learning.
•
Maintains working relationships with remote distance learning sites
within the Division of Agriculture.
•
Maintains relationships with other universities and extension services in
order to coordinate multi-state efforts in distance learning.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
•
Master's degree in a major instructional technology or related field.
•
Minimum of 2 years' experience in course development using emerging technologies (video,
audio, W W W, other multimedia), preferably in higher education.
•
Experience in conducting faculty training.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
•
Knowledge of educational methods and learning styles for students of all
ages.
•
Knowledge of media applications in learning.
•
Knowledge of research related to educational delivery through electronic
means.
•
Knowledge in the various areas of technology to be utilized in distance
learning.
•
Skills in computer proficiency.
•
Good communications skills, both written and oral.
•
Good public speaking skills.
•
Skills in program planning involving coordination with a variety of
individuals from different disciplines.
•
Good organizational skills.
•
Ability to organize, plan and develop training materials for professional
faculty.
•
Ability to translate traditional course delivery by subject matter
specialists into efficient electronic course delivery.
•
Ability to teach individuals and groups effectively.
•
Ability to produce creative and innovative designs.
