Nature and Purpose

The Director of Communications and Marketing directs the Communications and Marketing section for the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service.

The Director of Communications and Marketing assists Extension administration with the communications and public relations efforts of the Cooperative Extension Service with the goal of establishing the Cooperative Extension Service as relevant to the lives of Arkansans and supports the educational program through development and delivery of educational material.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

• Develops public relations strategies and tactics and administers activities of communications staff for developing, writing, producing and placing stories and using tools such as press releases and video news releases for media placement statewide, regarding the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service and its programs.

• Directs and coordinates activities of communications and marketing staff in developing special reports, articles, newsletters, brochures and other communications tools targeted to internal and external audiences regarding Extension, its mission and programs.

• Develops and directs relationships with other statewide organizations in positioning the Extension Service as a relevant educational institution within Arkansas.

• Provides consultation and instruction to content specialists, county faculty and other personnel regarding effective strategies and tactics for promoting Extension, its mission and programs.

• Directs and coordinates communications staff in providing instruction to content specialists, volunteers, county faculty and other personnel in the methodology relative to effective communications through the use of strategies, tactics and tools.

• Directs the design and production of educational material such as curriculum guides, videotapes, power point presentations, displays, signage and other devices in direct support of the educational program of the Cooperative Extension Service.

• Supports administration’s goals and objectives.

• Provides input and administers budget for communications and marketing.

• Responsible for compliance with applicable civil rights regulations in areas of assignment.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Relationships

• Reports to the Associate Director – Finance and Administration – Extension

• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with superiors, associates and subordinates.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• Masters degree in communications, marketing or related field.

• Five years of experience in organization and management of communications and public relations.

• Experience in print and/or electronic educational and/or public media desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of management and public relations.

• Knowledge of principles of mass communications.

• Knowledge of pre-press through post-press production.

• Ability to speak and write clearly.

• Ability to relate effectively with media representatives and the general public.

• Physical and mental ability to effectively perform duties and responsibilities related to the job, including long and irregular hours of work.
