Assistant Director - Agriculture and Natural Resources

Nature and Purpose
The Assistant Director - Agriculture and Natural Resources is a faculty
member of the University of Arkansas, Division of Agriculture, Cooperative
Extension Service, and serves as a member of the Executive Team of the Associate
Vice President for Agriculture - Extension.
The Assistant Director – Agriculture and Natural Resources is a faculty
member of the University of Arkansas, Division of Agriculture, Cooperative
Extension Service, and may hold a concurrent appointment with the U.S.
Department of Agriculture.
This position serves as a member of the Executive Team of the Associate Vice
President for Agriculture – Extension.
This position reports to the Associate Director – Programs.
The Assistant Director – Agriculture and Natural Resources is responsible for
providing leadership for the development of Extension programs in the areas of
Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Major Duties and Responsibilities

Provides visionary
leadership in planning, implementing, and evaluating programs in
Agriculture and Natural Resources. |
| • |
Coordinates
dissemination of research information. |
| • |
Counsels with
District teams in analyzing problem situations and program needs in
ANR. |
| • |
Coordinates budgets
within the ANR programs. |
| • |
Responsible for
compliance with applicable civil rights regulations in area of
Agriculture and Natural Resources. |
| • |
Seeks and develops
financial support for Arkansas Agriculture and Natural Resources
programs including external funds, gifts, endowments, grants and
contracts. |
| • |
Serves as a
spokesperson for Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources. |
| • |
Provides visionary
leadership for Agriculture and Natural Resources personnel,
including agents, faculty, program associates, and program
technicians. |
| • |
Works with
appropriate administrators to set State and District priorities for
ANR programs on an annual basis. |
| • |
Establishes and
supports interdisciplinary teams to address Agriculture and Natural
Resources issues. |
| • |
Facilitates and
provides leadership for the development of educational curricula and
effective professional development programs for employees and
volunteer leaders. |
| • |
Serves as a team
member with other Assistant Directors to develop, coordinate and
conduct the total Extension program. |
| • |
Provides leadership
for the development of statewide Extension plans of work and
accomplishment reports for ANR programs. Coordinates with AIMS in
the collection and processing of these plans and reports. |
| • |
Ensures that
non-traditional programs are integrated into the total Extension
effort, e.g., poultry, aquaculture. |
| • |
Develops operating
policies, establishes internal and external committees and counsels
as necessary for implementing programs. |
| • |
Performs other
duties as assigned. |
Relationships
| • |
Serves as a member
of the Executive Team of the Associate Vice President for
Agriculture – Extension. |
| • |
Works closely with
Associate Directors, unit heads, District teams and Assistant
Directors in the administration of the Cooperative Extension Service
programs. |
| • |
Promotes
consistency in evaluation of faculty across units through input,
oversight and review. |
| • |
Establishes and
maintains effective working relationships with federal, state, and
university officials, Agricultural Experiment Station, farm and
other organizations, commodity groups, and the general public. |
Qualifications
Education and Experience
|
• |
Doctorate in agriculture, natural resources or related field of study
required. |
|
• |
Five years of experience in a discipline related to one of Agriculture
and Natural Resources required. |
|
• |
Five years of professional Extension experience preferred. |
|
• |
Experience in planning and implementing educational programs
required. |
| • |
Administrative experience preferred. |
|
|
|
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
|
• |
Knowledge of the history, philosophy, objectives, and
methods of Cooperative Extension work. |
|
• |
Knowledge of the social, economic, political, and cultural
factors affecting Extension work. |
|
• |
Functional knowledge in the area of agriculture and
natural resources. |
|
• |
Ability to develop and manage innovative programs in
Extension or related activities. |
|
• |
Ability to develop rapport with diverse audiences, the
general public, commodity organizations, and other groups concerned
with the program areas served. |
|
• |
Ability to speak and write clearly, and to convey ideas
effectively to faculty, staff, and the general public. |
|
• |
Physical and mental ability to effectively perform duties
and responsibilities related to the job, including long and
irregular hours of work and frequent travel. |
