Retiree Status

Policy Number: C.E.S.P. 1-13
Date Revised: 6-22-2007
Supersedes: 9-15-2005

Summary: Establishes policy and procedure for granting retiree privileges, including emeritus status, to retiring Extension employees.

To be considered a retiree at the time of termination of employment, an employee must meet at least one of the following conditions.

1. Age 65 or older with five continuous years of employment with the University.
2. Age 62 or older with ten years of continuous service with the University.
3. Twenty years of continuous service with the University.
4. Eligible for early retirement under provisions approved by the Board of Trustees.

All retirees who meet one of the above conditions are entitled to the following privileges:

1. Use of the University campus library.
2. Eligibility to purchase a faculty/staff parking decal.
3. Faculty/staff admission to campus activities and events (including athletic events).
4. Continued use of the Division of Agriculture identification card.

Classified employees who meet one of the above conditions are entitled to a partial payment of accumulated, unused sick leave in accordance with the provisions of Arkansas Code 21-4-501 and of Act 1288 of 2005. This privilege does not apply to non-classified employees.

Retiring Extension non-classified employees may be awarded emeritus status at the rank/title held at the time of retirement. Emeritus employees are expected to assist and support the University in the areas of competence, particularly in an advisory capacity, when requested to do so. To be considered for emeritus status, an individual must be recommended by the director and approved by the Board of Trustees. Recommendations for emeritus status will be submitted in February of each year with conferral effective on July 1.

Emeritus status entitles the recipient to the following additional privileges:

1. Presentation of an emeritus certificate or resolution appropriate for framing.
2. Use of the title.

* Both the UA Treasurer’s Office and AES indicate that tuition reduction/waiver is not a privilege granted to retirees or their dependents.
