Sick Leave
Policy Number: C.E.S.P. 7-7
Date Revised: 6-9-2005
Supersedes: 11-30-2004 |
Summary: Establishes policies and procedures concerning
sick leave for all Extension employees.
Eligibility for leave is determined by the percentage of
time the employee is assigned to work. No sick leave is earned when leave
without pay totals 80 or more hours within a calendar month. Sick leave
must be earned before taken. Sick leave may be taken and reported in
increments of one-quarter hour. If an employee takes 3 or more consecutive
days of sick leave, the supervisor must notify the Benefits Manager who
will determine if Family Medical Leave is applicable. Upon return to
work after five or more consecutive days of sick leave, a classified
employee is required to furnish the supervisor a certificate from an
attending physician.
I. Regular Appointed Employees
• Sick leave is earned at the rate of 12 days per
calendar year. This translates to 96 hours per year or 8 hours per

If your employment is terminated, you are not entitled to be paid for
accrued sick leave. However, if you are laid off and within six months
again become an Extension employee, accrued sick leave may be restored.
• Faculty members participating in the Federal Civil
Service Retirement System may accumulate sick leave indefinitely.
II. Hourly Employees
Appointed hourly employees who work more than 1,000
hours per calendar year accrue sick leave in the same proportion as
the time worked. For example: Employees who work (50 percent) earn 6
days (48 hours) of sick leave per year or 4 hours per month.
