Holidays

Policy Number: C.E.S.P. 7-20
Date Revised: 2-28-2002
Supersedes: 10-22-2001

Summary: Establishes holidays to be observed by all employees of the Cooperative Extension Service, University of Arkansas.

The following holiday schedule for the Cooperative Extension Service will be followed:

Observed Holidays

• New Year's Day
• Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
• Presidents' Day / Daisy Gatson Bates Day (taken at Christmas)
• Memorial Day
• Independence Day
• Labor Day
• Veterans' Day (taken at Christmas)
• Thanksgiving Day
• Day following Thanksgiving
• Christmas Eve
• Christmas Day
• Employee's Birthday (Taken at Christmas)

All employees are eligible to receive holiday pay. The amount of holiday pay is based on the percentage the employee is assigned to work. For example, an employee working at the rate of 50% would be paid for four hours (50% of 8) on each authorized holiday. Although other holidays are observed in some counties, county faculty members are not permitted to take the additional holidays. On such days, faculty must schedule field work if it is impossible to work in the office. Classified employees will be given the holiday when the county office building is closed.

To receive pay for a holiday, employees must be in a paid status (not on leave without pay) the work day before the holiday and the work day after the holiday.

Calculation of Holiday Pay for Temporary Employees

All temporary employees are eligible to receive holiday pay only if they are in pay status on their last scheduled work day before the holiday and at least one hour on the first scheduled work day after the holiday.

1. Calculate the hours possible for the particular pay period (the number of hours the employee could have worked during the pay period, exclusive of the holiday).

2. Calculate the percentage of time worked during the pay period by dividing the number of hours the temporary employee worked by the hours possible (step 1).  If the temporary employee works during the holiday, those hours worked will be excluded from this calculation.

3. Multiply that percentage by the number of holiday hours in the pay period.

For temporary employees who are new or are terminating during the pay period, the number of hours possible will be based upon the date of hire or date of termination, not on the total days in the pay period.

Extension faculty and staff located on University campuses, Research and Extension Centers, Cammack campus, or employees with a Cooperative work assignment and located within another agency  will observe the holiday schedule at their respective locations.
