Emergency Procedures for State Extension Office Complex

Policy Number: C.E.S.P. 3-12
Date Revised: 4-23-2001
Supersedes: 9-8-1999

Summary: Establishes fire and tornado emergency procedures for employees in the state extension office complex.

Tornado Preparedness

• Physical plant personnel will monitor severe weather conditions. When severe weather conditions exist, department monitors will be notified by phone. If a tornado has been confirmed in the general area, all monitors will be contacted and tornado procedures will be implemented.

• Floor monitors will go through each section to notify personnel of a possible tornado. All employees should follow instructions given by the floor monitors.

• Stay away from windows.

• Close doors to offices which have windows.

• Do not use the elevators.

• Personnel on the second and third floors should proceed to the first floor in an orderly manner, using the stairs.

• Stay in the hall, conference room, bathrooms, storage rooms or any room that does not have a window.

• Do not stand or sit under hanging fixtures.

• Personnel working in the print media center (print shop and warehouse) should proceed to the main building upon being notified of a possible tornado in the area.

• If time does not permit personnel in the print media center to proceed to the main building, they should go to the caged area between the print shop and warehouse.

• Persons in the educational wing should go into the auditorium and stay close to the center of the room.

• Stay calm at all times and listen for additional instructions.

• Anyone needing assistance should notify the floor monitor.

Fire Preparedness or Fire Drills

• Everyone must leave the building.

• Do not use the elevators - use the stairs.

• Those exiting the building through the south or east doors, should proceed to the southeast parking lot. Those exiting through the west or north doors, should go to the wooded area on the north side of the entrance drive.

• Print Media Center (print shop and warehouse) will exit the building and proceed to the east side of the south parking lot.

• Do not re-enter the building until clearance is given.

In Case of Fire:

• Employees should notify floor monitors if assistance is needed for other employees. Notify fire or rescue personnel if needed.

• Employees may offer to assist, but follow the instructions of fire department personnel.
